Abstract

This descriptive study was done for the purpose of exploring practice of safety management, knowledge and practice of personal hygiene for health promotion and disease prevention of the 5th and 6th grades elementary school children
The subjects were consisted of 428 children of the 5th and the 6th grades of B elementary school.
The data was collected from the 18th to the 22nd of November, 1985.
The questionnaire developed by the researcher consisted of 43 items.
Data was analyzed by frequency and percentage.
The results of the study were as follows:
1. Mean age of the subjects was 12.3 years old. They had three siblings in 39.7%, and 40,9% of the subjects were Protestants.
2. For practice of safety management, the children reported "putting their belongings in place" 92.3%, "select a safety blade with a handle" 80.1%, "walk in the corridor in accordance to the walking lines" 23.1%, and "double check the signal light on the cross road before they cross the street" 96.7%.
3. For self-reported knowledge about personal hygiene for health promotion and disease prevention, the children had knowledge that they have to "wash their hair frequently" 98.6%, "cut nails frequently" 98.1%, "take vegetables, fish with bones, dried anchovies, and fruits to keep their teeth healthy" 97.3%, "take vermicides twice a year" 96.5%, and "exercise regularly" 93.7%.
4. In practicing above knowledge the children reported that the "wash their hands after using toilet-, before meals, and when come home from school" 69.2%, "take vermicides twice a year" 62.1%, "use tissue papers to spit up on the street" 37.6%, and "go to the school nurse when they feel sick in school"-13.8%.
In conclusion, the students not only show knowledge about safety management, personal hygiene, and disease prevention, but practiced most of the time. This evidence suggest that health behaviors have been rather efficiently carried out from the earlier school life.
